Our education project integrates the science of the parent proposal with an education program that incorporates the cultural and management contexts of the two local tribes, the Jamestown S'Klallam and Lower Elwha Klallam, whose historical lands include the Dungeness and Elwha watersheds.
We have developed and delivered a teacher training workshop in the summer of 2008, and will support up to 20 local high-school students for a school year science project this coming school year. This will allow teachers and students to experience standards-based science content knowledge with a skill set linked to tribal resource and management perspectives.
The interactions between E/PO participants and the Solutions Network will also allow us to evaluate how this model might be translated for use in watersheds with similar cultural and managerial situations, with the goal of improving science education in general and science education for American Indian and other underrepresented/underserved students in particular.
